A Step Forward to Protect Child Trafficking Victims

On July 23, NBC Los Angeles interviewed Ima Matul, Survivor Coordinator at the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST), to discuss a new federal bill that strengthens the U.S. child welfare system’s response to child trafficking.

Introduced by Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA) and Rep. John Kline (R-MN), the Strengthening the Child Welfare Response to Trafficking Act of 2014 seeks to support child welfare agencies and help them identify and serve trafficked children. Ima stressed the interconnection between trafficking and child welfare and hopes the legislation will improve statewide efforts to combat this problem.
